The Smith family, based out of Kernersville, NC, founded Cheer Extreme Allstars (CEA) in 1992. What began as a recreational cheerleading league for a local elementary school became a World Championship competitive cheerleading program. The first location in Kernersville NC is one of the most respected programs in the United States. Here is Courtney Smith Pope's story: "In 1992 while coaching a group of recreational basketball cheerleaders, I decided to form a special group for competitions. I was 15 years old. The next season we took this same group of 2nd - 5th graders to nationals. When I attended college at Wake Forest University, CEA grew to two squads and while pursuing a degree in Biology, we won our first Nationals in 1998. Going into my senior year, after a tryout with almost 150 girls, I decided not to enter medical school and put all my energies into an allstar cheerleading program. That season Cheer Extreme began on a quest to be one of the nation's very best cheer gyms."
Courtney's sister, Kelly Smith, grew up in a world surrounded by the cheerleading business. While the Smith family ran the cheer gym full-time throughout her teenage years, she was flying point on the inaugural Senior Elite squad from 1996-2002. With a strong academic and athletic background, Kelly went on to attend NC State University from 2002-2006 as a Park Scholar, where she cheered under Harold Trammel for the Varsity Squad (Red Team) all four years. Upon graduating as valedictorian of NC State Business School in 2006, Kelly became the allstar director for Cheer Extreme Raleigh in April of that year. The lessons learned by both Courtney and Harold would prove to be invaluable. Throughout the last 7 seasons, CEA Raleigh has won over 100 national championships, including 2 NCA National Championships in the Small Junior Coed 5 division, and medaled at the World Championship 5 times in two separate divisions. CEA Raleigh currently houses 14 competitive cheerleading squads, half of which are level 5 (the highest level offered in cheer) and the athletes range in age from 4 to 35 years old. We look forward to many more competitive seasons in our future.
